Child Tax Credit, part of the American Rescue Plan, provides relief for working families

Guest Editorial by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance reminded taxpayers to review their eligibility for The Child Tax Credit. The American Rescue Plan increased the Child Tax Credit to $3,600 per child for children under 6 years old and $3,000 per child for children ages 6-17. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will begin distributing monthly payments of up to $300 per child to eligible families in the coming weeks; the remaining half of the 2021 credits must be claimed on income tax returns filed next spring.

“This monthly payment from the IRS can make a real difference in the lives of New Yorkers,” said Acting Commissioner of Taxation and Finance Amanda Hiller. “I encourage all working families to review their eligibility and take action right now if they need to register to receive this critical funding. This is money you’re entitled to.”

If you’ve filed tax returns for 2019 or 2020, or if you signed up to receive a stimulus check from the Internal Revenue Service, you will get this tax relief automatically. You do not need to sign up or take any action. Visit the Child Tax Credit web page to see how much relief you’re eligible to receive.

If you did not have to file taxes in 2019 or 2020, and you did not register for Economic Impact Payments, visit Child Tax Credit for non-filers to register.
