City of Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown on Tuesday joined Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York President Dr. Michael Edbauer to announce season six of “Summer City Fitness.” The series of free dance fitness classes aims to engage city residents in healthy, fun activity. It will start Saturday, June 5.

"Our city parks have been more popular than ever during the COVID-19 epidemic, so it’s wonderful to be able to bring ‘Summer City Fitness’ back to Martin Luther King Jr. Park for a sixth season in 2021,” Brown said. “The series has been a great success as part of our continued efforts to create a healthier and more vibrant city. Thank You to Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York and Lancia Woods, of La’Movement, for once again teaming up with us as we work together to help residents maintain healthy lifestyles.”

The free fitness series features a mix of low- and high-impact dance fitness classes presented by Lancia “Lala” Woods. The sessions will take place Saturdays at MLK Park from June 5 to Aug. 7. The one-hour classes, which start at 10 a.m., will take place near the Martin Luther King Jr. statue.

Allison DeHonney, of Urban Fruits & Veggies, will also be at the park each week offering free fruit to participants.

“Our community is fortunate to have beautiful spaces, like Martin Luther King Jr. Park, where families can be active all four seasons,” said Julie R. Snyder, vice president of corporate affairs at Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York. “As the official health plan of the City of Buffalo, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is excited to kick off our sixth season of ‘Summer City Fitness’ in partnership with Mayor Brown, and we look forward to welcoming our community back to this amazing Olmsted Park to get healthy with La’Movement Fitness this summer.”

The classes are open to individuals of all ages, regardless of fitness level and experience. Preregistration is required for all classes.

All classes are weather-dependent. More information and a full calendar of fitness classes can be found at www.Bcbswny.com/scf. Participants will be encouraged to share their experiences on social media through #SummerCityFitness.
