The Buffalo History Museum welcomes Buffalo Bills all-star alumnus Steve Christie for a virtual breakfast tailgate at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9. This event will be held via Zoom. It will feature a moderated conversation with Christie.
Guests are encouraged to wear their Bills gear, prepare their Bills fan “live shot” exhibiting collected Bills treasures, artifacts and memorabilia. Zoom attendees will also have the opportunity to submit questions during the conversation.
Admission is free; registration is required in advance on Zoom here.
The program will be moderated by Buffalo Bills historian and chair of the museum’s board, Greg D. Tranter. In 2016, Tranter donated his collection of 108,000 Buffalo Bills artifacts, which chronicle the extensive history of the franchise, to the permanent collection of The Buffalo History Museum.
In addition to being a past member of The Buffalo History Museum’s board of managers (serving from 1994 to 2002), Christie is the greatest placekicker in Buffalo Bills history. He played with the team from 1992 through 2000 and is the franchise’s all-time leading scorer with 1,011 points. Christie has the most field goals in franchise history with 234, the single season scoring record with 140 points in 1998, and the longest field goal in franchise history at 59 yards (Sept. 26, 1993). He also has the longest field goal in Super Bowl history, a 54-yard field goal in Super Bowl XXVIII.
Christie was signed by the Bills as a Plan B free agent from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Feb. 5, 1992. His first field goal as a Bill was a 49-yarder vs. the Los Angeles Rams in the fourth quarter of a 40-7 win on Sept. 6, 1992.
Christie played for 15 years in the NFL, appearing in 229 games – 144 of those with the Bills. His 1,476 career points are the 25th most all-time in NFL history. In addition to the Bills, he played for Tampa Bay, San Diego and the New York Giants.
Christie had 22 game winning field goals in the fourth quarter and overtime, which is top 10 in NFL history. Of those 22, 13 were game-winners for the Bills, and seven took place in overtime.
He holds the Bills record with six field goals in a single game (tied by Tyler Bass this season). His other Bills records are most career points after touchdowns with 309; most consecutive points after touchdown, 172; and most field goals in a single season, 33. Christie also holds all the Bills postseason kicking records with 12 games played, 22 made field goals, 31 extra points and 97 total points. He was the first player in Bills history to wear jersey No. 2.
Christie finished his pro football career playing in the Canadian Football League for the Toronto Argonauts on July 7, 2007, vs. the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He scored 10 points in that game on two field goals, three extra points and a rouge. His great-grandfather had played in the CFL for Hamilton.
Admission to this event is free, but registration required in advance on Zoom here. Space is limited.
