Fri, Dec 11th 2020 07:00 am

The Grand Island School District announces its annual toy/gifts and food/toiletry drive for Grand Island families, and invites area residents to participate.

“It has been a tradition for us every year to organize toy and food drives for those in need,” said GISD spokesperson Cheryl Frieday. “With the challenges of COVID-19, your help is needed more than ever before. Consider donating one toy and one nonperishable food item or toiletry for a needy child.”

GISD will hold drop-off days for donations of toys, nonperishable foods and toiletry items from 3-5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18, and 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 19, behind Grand Island High School, 1100 Ransom Road. Visitors are asked to use driveway No. 5.

Toy and gift ideas include: games, books, crafts, logos, sports items, dolls, action figures, and Play-Doh. Also, items for teens such as gift cards, scarves, hats, socks, art supplies, sports, bath and body items or candy.

Nonperishable food and toiletry items can include: toilet paper, deodorants, feminine products, toothpaste, hand soap, bath and body items, plus shampoo, conditioner, razors and shaving cream.

Frieday said the nonperishable foods and toiletry items would be given to the food pantry operated by the Grand Island Neighbors Foundation. Toys and gifts will be delivered to needy families on Christmas Eve.

She notes those unable to the attend the drop-off at the high school on Dec. 18 or 19 may contact her to schedule a contactless pick-up of donated items. Call Frieday at 716-773-8815 for more information.
