Kiwanis Club of Niagara-Wheatfield awards scholarships, announces Chiavetta's BBQ fundraiser

Thu, Jul 23rd 2020 04:55 pm

The Niagara-Wheatfield Kiwanis Club recently honored two recipients of its 2020 scholarship program. The $500 scholarship winners include Akashpreet Grewel and Katelyn Hoover.

Normally, a $1,000 honor is given annually, but because of the coronavirus, the annual pancake breakfast and shredding event – the club’s main fundraising events – could not be convened.

On the evening of June 25, Kiwanis members decorated six vehicles and began a parade route for the recipients. The cars were decorated in the N-W school colors along with American flag waving from one of the convertibles. The parade formed in Bergholz, proceeded to Alder Creek, then on to Hoover Road, with many cars signaling a congratulatory beep.

Katlyn Hoover plans on attending D’Youville, majoring in nursing. Her community services include volunteering in Mount St. Mary’s Hospital’s escort and delivery departments in the summers of 2018 and 2019. Since 2018, she has also volunteered at “Feed the Falls,” packing Thanksgiving dinners with St Peter’s Lutheran Church. Katlyn also served as class president from 2018-20, and class secretary from 2016-18. She was a member of the outdoor club, student council and National Honor Society. Katlyn was a captain of both the JV and varsity tennis and was awarded the Scholar Athlete Award from 2016-19. In addition to her volunteer work, Katlyn is an emergency medical technician (EMT) with the Sanborn Fire Co. and has worked at the family business, Hoover’s Dairy, from 2016 to the present.

Akashpreet Grewel plans on attending University at Buffalo to major in biomedical sciences. Akashpreet has volunteered at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center in various departments, including escort, nursing home, gastroenterology, pharmacy and CT scan. He has been involved with Leadership Niagara’s Youth Leadership program, National Honor Society, outdoor club, DECA and was a member of the cross country and tennis teams. He also served as the pep club treasurer and has volunteered at Niagara-Wheatfield as a tutor for the high school’s West Street school activities. Along the way, Akashpreet received many awards, including Comptroller Student Achievement, Falcon Pride, N-W Academic Honor, Lions Club Citizen, and perfect attendance award (six-time recipient.) He is currently employed at DiCamillo Bakery and has been since 2018.

To replenish the Niagara-Wheatfield service account, the Kiwanis Club is hosting a Chiavetta’s Chicken BBQ from 3-6 p.m. Thursday, July 30. It will take place at Intandem (formally Opportunities Unlimited), 2510 Niagara Falls Boulevard. The dinner cost is $12 and includes a ½ chicken, potato salad, coleslaw, and roll with butter.

All the proceeds go directly to local children’s programs, as well as projects such as the scholarships, sending kids to summer camp, school supplies, camp supplies and more.
