Easter parading

Since families couldn’t visit the Easter Bunny this spring, the Easter Bunny decided to visit them – in grand fashion, nonetheless.

The Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Lewiston No. 1 Fire Co. and the Lewiston Police Department, paraded the Easter Bunny around the area on Saturday. The larger-than-life character sat atop a firetruck and waved to children as he rode down myriad streets.

“The chamber purchased an Easter Bunny costume last year and wanted to make sure it was being used this year. I contacted (Chief) Les (Myers) and asked him if he thought he could find a volunteer from the fire dept. to ride around Lewiston on Saturday. He was on it! We were able to coordinate the time from noon-4, and the police department volunteered and jumped on board!” Chamber of Commerce President Jennifer Pauly said. “We are lucky to live, work and play in a community that supports each other!

“This coming Saturday, we’ll continue on with the streets and neighborhoods that couldn’t be done last Saturday. We can’t guarantee every street, but will cover most. Residents are encouraged to come out to their driveways and wave! Social distancing rules apply!”

The Easter Bunny is expected to visit the Youngstown area this weekend. Sirens will announce his arrival.

Speaking of what he called “the longest parade ever,” Myers explained the first route started in the Village of Lewiston and extended to north and east subdivisions.

“There were hundreds of young children waiting in driveways to see the Easter Bunny perched atop one of Lewiston No. 1’s fire engines. But it wasn’t only young children outside: Residents of all ages took the opportunity to be outside on a beautiful afternoon to welcome spring to Lewiston,” Myers said.

He added, “During this uncertain time, it is nice for us to be able to bring smiles to the faces of both children and adults in our fire district. Lewiston 1 members love serving the community and were excited at this opportunity.”

LPD Chief Frank Previte said, “The department was excited to participate in the Easter Bunny tour on Saturday. It was great to see all the excited kids and parents. Events like this make us feel a little closer together at a time when we need to be apart.”
