By Jodee Riordan

Board of Education President

The health and wellness of Lewiston-Porter students, families, faculty and staff are always our priority. With concern for COVID-19, commonly referred to as the coronavirus, we are closely following the guidance provided by the Niagara County Department of Health, New York State Department of Health, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This guidance is based on what is currently known about the transmission and severity of coronavirus disease and is being updated as additional information becomes available.

We are stringently following guidelines and best practices in regard to cleaning protocols from these public health entities: Hand sanitizer has been deployed to all rooms; all restrooms are fully stocked with soap, and soap dispensers have been checked for proper function; Lewiston-Porter has increased the frequency and rigor of daily cleaning protocols, with our cleaning staff conducting thorough disinfectant procedures each night. We will continue to update these protocols as needed.

What You Can Do

Please review and practice the following routine, everyday preventive actions with your family:

•Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.

•Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands.

•Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

•Cover your mouth with your upper arm or a tissue when coughing or sneezing.

•Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

•If a student or staff member is sick, do not come to school.

Lewiston-Porter will continue to monitor the rapidly changing situation, adapt to the ever-changing recommendations, and update the district website (www.lew-port.com) to provide the latest information. We encourage you to stay informed by checking in with reliable and trusted expert sources, including the World Health Organization; U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Niagara County Department of Health; and the New York State Department of Health.

The situation with student travel (both within the country and abroad) is extremely fluid right now. As you know, the United States has suspended international travel to all of Europe in addition to certain Asian/Middle Eastern countries. Currently, there are no travel bans within the country. All scheduled travel plans are being reviewed and will be determined on a case-by-case basis at this point. Advisers will be in communication with travel companies and with parents.

Lewiston-Porter is are taking the same approach in reviewing all scheduled events, and will determine rescheduling and/or cancelation on a case-by-case basis at this time. We will continue to follow the guidance of federal, state and local public health organizations. Please rest assured that Lewiston-Porter will remain ever vigilant in our commitment to the health and safety of our school community.
