Erie County Board of Elections institutes new policy

Following a recent application for voter registration submitted by a non-citizen applying for a commercial driver’s license, Erie County Clerk Mickey Kearns appeared before the Erie County Board of Elections Commissioners and addressed the potential for voter fraud under the Green Light Law.

A press release from Kearns said, “Upon hearing the potential impact of the law and its privacy provisions, the Erie County Board of Elections instituted a new policy whereby they would not officially process voter registrations until five days after receipt to provide the Erie County Auto Bureau an opportunity to legally transmit any information regarding the ineligibility of applicants attempting to register to vote on the front facing devices.

“To comply with the Green Light Law, the Erie County Board of Elections approved a motion authorizing the execution of a certification that it would not provide any information to agencies that primarily enforce immigration policy.”
