Founding members of the Wheatfield Garden Club were honored Wednesday, Dec. 4, at the Club’s annual Christmas party held at Pane’s Restaurant on Payne Avenue. Included were Betty Painter, Arlene Mante, Nancy Mihalko and Doris Leaderstorf. Absent were Shirley Allen and Clarice Poerschke.
The Garden Club was founded in 1937 by a group of hard-working women who shared a love of plants, gardening and, of course, Wheatfield. Their modest beginnings evolved into a working group that maintains the beautiful gardens at the Town Hall Campus, Fairmount Park and at the signs welcoming people to Wheatfield.
Through various committees, they have presented programs during their meetings on a wide variety of subjects. The travel committee organizes bus or car-pool trips concentrating on educating as well as entertaining the members.
Meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month from March to October, at the Community and Senior Center on Church Road, culminating in the group’s annual Christmas Party. Guest speakers provide educational presentations to members each meeting
The officers for the Wheatfield Garden Club were also installed. Diane Brodfuehrer was installed as Secretary, Shirley Joy as Treasurer, Grace Leaderstorf, a founding member and installation officer, Pat Anderson as President, and Julie Forcucci as Vice President.
The Wheatfield Garden Club has also, once again, demonstrated its members’ creativity by decorating this tree at the New York Power Authority’s “Festival of Trees” inside the visitors center.
The trees are decorated for the season by area nonprofit groups and will be on display all month.
Parking and admission are free at the Power Vista.
