Zac Campas of North Tonawanda was provided life-saving treatment by the Oishei Children’s Hospital of Buffalo when he was an infant. Zac has since grown into an active member of the North Tonawanda community. He mows lawns around his neighborhood to earn extra money, works part-time as a cleaner at the Gentleman’s Club Barber shop and is a regular with of North Tonawanda Neighborhood Watch group.
Over the past year, Zac has taken it upon himself to collect bottles and cans from family, friends and neighbors, take them to a local bulk return center, and donate the proceeds back to the Oishei Children’s Hospital.
Zac’s efforts are honorable, to say the least, but his current method of collection lacks efficiency and yields minimal return. So, he has decided to team up with the North Tonawanda Neighborhood Watch organization along with North Tonawanda Clerk/Treasurer Matt Parish and hold a yearly bottle and can drive called “Zac Gives back.”
“Zac’s been our neighbor for a few years now. Every now and again he would ask if he could have our empty bottles and cans,” NT Neighborhood Watch representative Joe Marranca III said. “I figured he was just trying to earn a little extra spending money. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that he was actually donating the proceeds back to a worthy cause”
“It makes me feel good that I can help others who need it,” Zac said. “The hospital saved my life and I’m thankful they did. This is my way to give back.”
The bottle and can drive will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday Oct. 24, in the parking lot of the North Tonawanda Youth Center, located at 383 Vandervoort St.
Accommodations can be made for those who are unable to drop off during the allocated time frame. For further information, call the North Tonawanda clerk/treasurer’s office at 716-685-8555.
