Porter sets 2nd annual vets chicken BBQ, raffle

Sat, Aug 31st 2019 07:00 am

The Town of Porter announced this week that preparations are now underway for the second annual veterans chicken barbecue/basket raffle. It will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Youngstown Volunteer Fire Co. firehall, 325 Third St. All veterans and residents are invited.

Porter Councilwoman Irene Myers chairs this event along with post commanders Ed Jackson of Youngstown VFW Lake Ontario Post 313 and Rick Newman of American Legion O. Leo Curtiss Post 830 in Ransomville, and Porter Supervisor John “Duffy” Johnston.

Myers said, “Right now, we are looking for donations (baskets) for this year’s event.”

Ki-Po Chevrolet in Ransomville is now accepting baskets and donations for the planned raffle.

“Keith Lucas of Ki-Po Chevrolet is offering a $10 gift certificate from the dealership to be used on any purchase sale/service to those who bring a donation/basket to the dealership,” Myers said. “Keith also made a donation of $150 to the VFW Post 313 for supplies towards this year’s barbecue. If you would like to donate a basket, please feel free to drop it off at Ki-Po Chevrolet.”

Myers said many others in the northern Niagara community are already joining in the effort. That includes Brad Hardison of Hardison Funeral Homes, who is again picking up the cost of printing the tickets. Last year, Hardison teamed with the Ransomville Ladies Auxiliary. This year, he’s working with the Youngstown Ladies Auxiliary.

Myers praised the hard work and dedication of commanders Newman and Jackson, members of their posts, and the community.

“I am ecstatic by the generosity of everyone,” she said. “Last year, we sold over 500 dinners and we’re hoping to top it this year! Between the dinners and basket raffle, we were able to help both the Ransomville and Youngstown’s post.”

Myers said the commanders of both posts report their respective memberships have declined and they are inviting area veterans to join.

“Any vet who would like to join either post the day of the barbecue can bring their DD214 and initiation fee and they will receive a free chicken barbecue with their membership!” Myers said.

Tickets are priced at $11 pre-sale or $12 at the door. They will be available at the Porter Town Hall, from Ransomville and Youngstown post members, and at various businesses throughout the Town of Porter.

Also planned that day will be an hourly money draw starting at 1 p.m.
