Proceeds from family-friendly festival will help feed hungry community members

FeedMore WNY is seeking participants of all ages for the 12th annual “Walk Off Hunger,” which will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 27, at Island Park in Williamsville. Presented by Life Storage, this family-friendly event will help FeedMore WNY provide more nutritious meals to hungry local children, families, seniors and veterans this summer and into the fall.

“Walk Off Hunger” is co-hosted by Calvary Episcopal Church and Congregation Shir Shalom. Check-in and registration will begin at 10 a.m., with the 2-mile walk starting at 11 a.m. “Walk Off Hunger” will include a festival featuring food and drinks, children’s activities, bounce houses, musical entertainment, visits from local sports teams’ mascots, basket raffles and more. Free parking is available at Williamsville South High School, located at 5950 Main St.

Nearly one in five children in FeedMore WNY’s four-county service area struggles with hunger. These children are especially vulnerable during the summer when they are missing the nutritious meals they receive through school. “Walk Off Hunger” was strategically created as a summertime fundraiser in order to help FeedMore WNY provide healthy meals to these children and their families, as well as feed hungry community members of all ages.

Proceeds from “Walk Off Hunger” allow FeedMore WNY to continue to distribute food through its network of agencies and targeted feeding programs, including the BackPack Program, which assists students who rely on their school meal program by providing them with food to take home on weekends. This year, FeedMore WNY expanded the BackPack Program to feed children during the summer months.

“Hunger exists in every corner of our community, from our cities to our suburbs and rural neighborhoods. At FeedMore WNY, we work hard to eradicate hunger, but we cannot do so without help from the community,” said Tara A. Ellis, president and CEO of FeedMore WNY. “Participating in ‘Walk Off Hunger’ is a wonderful opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of our neighbors in need. We encourage you to invite your family and friends to join us on July 27 for this family-friendly festival and critical fundraiser for FeedMore WNY.”

Registration for the walk is $25 per person; children ages 15 and younger are free to participate. Walkers can register the day of the event or online at www.foodbankwny.org. Community members also can participate in a special drawing to win a home entertainment system, which includes a 4K television, theater receiver and speaker system, as well as professional installation. Tickets are $5 for one entry, $10 per three entries, or $20 for 10 entries. Tickets are available by calling FeedMore WNY at 716-852-1305. Tickets also will be sold at the event; participants in the drawing need not be present to win. The drawing is sponsored by Andreozzi Bluestein LLP.

FeedMore WNY offers dignity, hope and a brighter future by providing nutritious food, friendship and skills training to its Western New York neighbors in need. Through its Food Bank Distribution Center and partner hunger-relief agencies, as well as its Meals on Wheels and other targeted feeding programs, FeedMore WNY alleviates hunger and assists community members of all ages throughout Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie and Niagara counties.
