The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York has awarded the 2019 FASNY Gerard J. Buckenmeyer Volunteer Scholarship to Megan Amacher of Sanborn. Amacher received a certificate and scholarship of $1,500 for her volunteer service in the community from Andrew Pilecki, member of the FASNY board of directors.
“The Tri-Community Ambulance Company has opened my eyes to a whole new world and has helped me really see what I want to do with my life,” Amacher said. “I want to serve my community and help save the lives of others.”
Amacher plans to attend Niagara County Community College in the fall where she intends to study nursing.
Outside of the firehouse she participates in softball. This fall she will be joining the Thunderwolves softball team.
Amacher is one of 26 students chosen for this scholarship.
“Tri-Community has given me the opportunity of a lifetime, allowing me to ride on the ambulance, letting me help, and seeing the things that happen in the medical field,” Amacher said. “I thank the Tri-Community Ambulance Company for everything they have done for me.”
Scholarships are awarded on the basis of an applicant’s volunteer service to his or her community, such as serving with a local fire department, scouting, church, school, work with senior citizens, fire prevention, and other projects. Additional criteria include consistent demonstration of good character and completion of a written essay.
The Gerard J. Buckenmeyer FASNY Volunteer Scholarship program is made possible each June through the generous donations of individuals, fire departments and auxiliaries. This year, Provident Agency Inc., the provider of the accidental death and dismemberment insurance for FASNY members, has again provided major underwriting support to help FASNY award scholarships to young volunteers. FASNY would also like to recognize the in-kind support donated by McNeil and Co., which provides more than 80 hours of administrative work needed to process the applications and awards.
Founded in 1872, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York represents the interests of the approximately 105,000 volunteer firefighters and emergency medical personnel in New York state.
