A year to the day of opening, the Holiday Inn Express threw a first birthday party Wednesday.

The formerly long vacant office building has been transformed into a modern hotel and continues to progress, with work on the rooftop deck almost complete.

The Holiday Inn Express of Grand Island, located at 2761 Long Road, marked its first birthday with a free celebration from 4 to 8 p.m. The party Wednesday included food trucks and vendors, Zumba a basket drawing and viewing of the movie “Greatest Showman.”

“Somehow we finished the year. I didn’t even realize how quickly it went by,” said Holiday Inn Express Grand Island owner Jay Patel.

Looking back, Patel said, “We’ve been growing our occupancy steadily and the place has been welcomed by locals, Islanders. That’s very much appreciated. They have been booking a lot of birthday parties and small parties, and within the next 30 days, we are set to open our rooftop.”

The rooftop will be the cherry on top of the sundae and is a short elevator ride to the fourth floor for patrons. The deck will provide one of the highest vantage points on the Island. On a nice day, Islanders will see the mist from the falls in the distance, Patel said.
