A portion of the funds raised at this year’s Lewiston Smelt Festival will go toward outfitting Shadow, the Lewiston Police Department’s 20-month-old German shepherd from the Czech Republic.
Officer Scott Stafford said the K-9 needs certain jute-style tugs and balls, a leather muzzle, leads that need replacing, as well as bite sleeves.
“We’ve been pretty fortunate for the past 13 years, because I’ve taken good care of the equipment; but it does take a beating after a while,” Stafford said.
The Lewiston Smelt Festival will take place beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, May 3, at Academy Park. Samples are free, but donations are appreciated and will benefit both the LPD and the Niagara River Anglers Association.
