Warning of phone scam with calls 'spoofed' as originating from Erie County Clerk's Office

Erie County Clerk Michael P. Kearns is warning Erie County residents of a phone scam where incoming calls will appear on a caller ID display as coming from the Erie County Clerk’s Office. The scammer then requests personal identifying information while proposing to offer debt relief services.

The clerk’s office never makes unsolicited calls to individuals. It does not provide the services offered in these calls, and this office does not request personal identifying information unless it is necessary to a customer-initiated transaction with the clerk’s office or the Erie County Auto Bureau.

If residents receive an unsolicited call indicating it is coming from the Erie County Clerk’s Office, they are urged to ignore the call and any voice message left on the device.

As with many of these phone scams, Kearns advises residents to follow the advice often given by the Erie County sheriff: Just hang up.
