This week, Republican Assemblyman Angelo J. Morinello co-sponsored a bill (A.675) limiting robocalls to residents in New York state and requiring telephone service providers to offer free call-mitigation technology to telephone customers. He said, each year, state residents are overwhelmed with a scourge of unwanted robocalls and this legislation would make it unlawful to utilize robocalls without prior consent from the consumer.

“Unwanted robocalls are an issue year-round, but tax return season only heightens the threat of being scammed by an unknown caller,” Morinello said. “To some, these calls are a mere annoyance, but they can be extremely dangerous to our senior population. Robocalls often use lies and deceit to steal information and money from consumers. These costly financial scams hurt families and ruin lives, and it’s only getting worse. I’m encouraged the Legislature is making an effort to limit robocalls in New York state and hope this bill will swiftly become law.”

Morinello represents the 145th Assembly District, which consists of parts of Erie and Niagara counties. For more information, visit his official website.
