Providing care for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease can be stressful and isolating, but support groups can provide coping tools and a welcoming embrace from others in the same position.

The Alzheimer's Association Western New York chapter sponsors a number of caregiver support groups across the eight-county region it represents, and is offering a free training program for those interested in facilitating those meetings. The groups meet monthly, and are designed to provide emotional and social support for caregivers and help participants develop methods and skills to solve problems. Meeting facilitators also encourage caregivers to maintain their own personal, physical and emotional health, as well as provide the best care possible for the person with dementia.

The chapter is scheduling training for volunteers interested in overseeing a monthly support group meeting in the Lewiston area and willing to commit to the role for at least one year.

For additional information on the requirements for becoming a facilitator, including expected time requirements, contact Marie Baun in the association’s local chapter office at 716-626-0600, ext. 8994, or by email at [email protected].
