Winter storm affects Niagara County, too

Though northern Niagara County certainly escaped the brunt of this week’s blizzards that paralyzed much of Buffalo and Erie County, that’s not to say the area didn’t have its share of problems, too. The area dodged the snow bullet, but it certainly didn’t escape unscathed.

Bitter cold, subzero temperatures accompanied by oftentimes dangerous wind chills prevailed throughout much of the area this week, resulting in numerous closures and disruptions throughout the River Region.

Numerous schools, including the Lewiston-Porter Central School District, St. Peter’s, Stella Niagara and Sacred Heart Villa had snow days. Niagara Falls schools and the Niagara-Wheatfield district were closed from Wednesday through Friday. Joining them were Niagara University and Niagara County Community College, which both cancelled classes and activities on Wednesday and Thursday. Various businesses and activities were, likewise, shelved.

The storm led to record calls for emergency auto service AAA and repair shops throughout the area. Broken water mains hitting the towns of Lewiston and Porter and nearby Niagara Falls disrupted water/sewer, highway and public works departments.

There were also tragedies, including a fire that destroyed a garage at a Porter Center Road residence, and a house fire that displaced a family on Youngstown Lockport Road in Ransomville. That was despite the efforts of numerous fire responders battling frigid temperatures.

Winter’s wrath is expected to move out of the area over the next week, with above-normal temperatures expected.
