3rd annual event seeks to make public participation more accessible

The City of Niagara Falls Community Development Department invites local residents to have a slice and discuss the draft 2019 action plan from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the Carnegie Building, 1022 Main St. The third annual “PIZZA with the PLAN” offers a casual setting for residents to discuss 2019 funding priorities with NFCD staff.

“We like to be accessible,” said Seth Piccirillo, NFCD director. “A meeting like this allows us to get more honest feedback from residents that might not come to a typical government public meeting.”

Every year, NFCD sets forth an annual action plan that lays out the programs and activities to be funded with federal dollars from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. As an entitlement city, Niagara Falls receives funds from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME), and Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) programs on an annual basis. Combined, these programs bring in approximately $2.5 million annually to the city to primarily benefit low-to-moderate-income residents through programs such as housing rehabilitation, closing cost assistance grants, public services, and homelessness services.

The draft 2019 action plan was published to the NFCD website on Dec. 17. That started a 30-day public comment period to end on Jan. 18. Residents can view the draft 2019 action plan online at nf-cd.org/participate. Copies are also available at the Carnegie Building. An official public hearing will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, in City Hall Council Chambers.

Residents can comment on the draft 2019 action plan online at nf-cd.org/participate, in person at the public meetings or at the Carnegie Building, or by mail to Niagara Falls Community Development, Attn: 2019 Action Plan, PO Box 69, Niagara Falls, NY 14302.

NFCD will make adjustments to the plan based on public comments before submitting to Niagara Falls City Council for approval.
