The annual Community Baskets collection drive will soon be getting underway in Youngstown-Porter - and organizers can use your help.
"Please help us with your time and monetary donations to make this holiday season happier for needy local families in Youngstown and the Town of Porter. We have over 100 individuals and families whom we provide a food box to, plus gifts for all of the children," said resident Beverly Roach. She reported the Youngstown Civic Guild is now accepting monetary donations that will go toward this year's campaign. "We use monetary donations to purchase food, and gifts for children. Your contribution is tax deductible."
Roach said those interested in helping out make checks payable to the Youngstown Civic Guild. Checks can be mailed to: John Rolfe, Treasurer, Youngstown Civic Guild, 337 Riverview Drive, Youngstown, NY, 14174.
Checks can also be dropped off at the Village of Youngstown office at the Red Brick Village Center on Lockport Street.
Roach said Youngstown Boy Scout Troop 829 members will be out in the community on Sunday, Dec. 9, collecting canned goods and other nonperishables for the needy. Village residents are asked to put out the requested items in bags on the front porch or near their mailbox for pick up.
A number of Youngstown businesses also have collection boxes for canned goods and other nonperishables at their locations, including Anchor Spirits, A&M Automotive, The Village Diner, Bandana's Bar and Grill, Mug and Musket, Everything Youngstown, Ontario House (aka Stone Jug), Dan and Lucy Wilson Realty, Victoria's Hair Care, and Main Street Pizzeria. In addition, the Youngstown Free Library will have a box and there will also be one at the Red Brick Village Center during the "Christmas in the Village" celebration. In Ransomville, participants include Patti's Cut Above and Stevenson's Hardware.
Once all the food, gift and monetary donations are collected, organizers will seek volunteers to help with part two of this effort. That includes wrapping presents from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday-Thursday, Dec. 10-13, at the Red Brick Village Center gym; collecting and sorting canned goods at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, also in the Red Brick gym; and assisting in the packing and delivery of food boxes and gifts, starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at the Red Brick. Those with trucks, vans and strong backs are needed to help deliver.
"We hope you'll join in to have fun, and to help experience the true spirit of the season," Roach said.
