Perhaps the most successful Niagara County Peach Festival of all time - four days strong and no rain this year - concluded Sunday night with the crowning of a new Peach Queen: Santana Sawma.
Hailing from Niagara Falls, the Niagara-Wheatfield High School graduate is a senior nursing student at Niagara University. Sawma plans to use her education to become a pediatric nurse practitioner. She is a member of the Purple Eagles swimming and diving team, and a volunteer for Make-A-Wish and the Ronald McDonald House's "Cooks 4 Kids."
Sawma will receive a $4,000 scholarship, courtesy of the Lewiston Kiwanis Club.
Richelle Kloch of North Tonawanda, also a Purple Eagle - and a future law student - finished second. Hannah Mergi of Youngstown finished third. She plans to become a nurse and trauma surgeon with the U.S. military.
Rachel Buzzard was voted Miss Congeniality by her peers. Nina Trank took home the Bright Star Award.
Outgoing Peach Queen Jamie Hagerty said her goodbyes while announcing she raised $4,000 for the Hillside Family of Agencies.
WGRZ-TV Channel 2 anchor Maryalice Demler emceed the pageant. Jennifer Pauly is the chairwoman of the Peach Queen program while her sister, Katelyn Allan, is the judges' liaison.
On Saturday, Jacob Lopez was named Peach Fuzz. Calliope Latawiec won the title of Peach Blossom.
