Niagara County Community College sponsored a new initiative this summer to empower girls as part of the Future Leaders Liberty Partnerships Program. Becoming Wonder Woman focuses on supporting students with life and social skills, mentoring, leadership, service learning, community service, wellness, and social and emotional development.
The Becoming Wonder Woman leadership camp was comprised of girls selected to represent schools throughout Niagara County, including Gaskill Preparatory School, Niagara Street School, and North Park Junior High School. The girls met weekly from June through August, utilizing research practices proven to promote a deeper sense of community and encourage development of leadership and resiliency skills.
Each weekly session is centered on restorative circle practices, which provide a safe environment for the girls to authentically speak and learn together. Activities and workshops are designed and chosen to address the challenges of adolescent girlhood and include topics such as healthy relationships, communication, self-care, and advocacy. Additionally, the girls are presented with the opportunity to participate in other activities, including hiking through the former Niagara Gorge train system, weekly yoga practice for self-care, a women's self-defense workshop, a water bike teambuilding field trip, and an overnight camp experience at the Windy Meadows Girl Scout Camp in Cambria.
Camp activities will culminate in an open house at the New York State Power Authority, Niagara Power Project, 5777 Lewiston Road in Lewiston, from 2-4 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 15. This free event is open to the public and will showcase the girls' work and experiences, while they lead circles so that guests may share in their summer experience.
The Future Leaders Niagara Liberty Partnerships Program is sponsored by a New York State Department of Education Grant and serves over 280 students throughout Western New York. The program is taking new students in grades 6-8 that reside within partner school districts.
