Northtowns Auto Bureau to begin Saturday service, first expansion of weekend service in more than 10 years
Erie County Clerk Mickey Kearns announced the Northtowns Auto Bureau is officially expanding to offer additional weekend hours. Joined by Tonawanda Legislator Kevin Hardwick, Kearns announced the Northtowns Auto Bureau will begin Saturday service on July 28.
The expansion of weekend hours for auto bureau service comes after the Erie County Legislature approved the hiring of 11 additional civil service employees, at no cost to taxpayers, in April. The additional weekend hours will help to mitigate the significant volume local auto bureaus have been experiencing due to New York state license renewals.
"I am thrilled to be able to open the Northtowns Auto Bureau as an additional Saturday location to receive auto bureau services. My continued goal as the Erie County clerk is to increase accessibility to the resources and services of the clerk's office," Kearns said. "Additional Saturday hours will help give taxpayers in Erie County flexibility in completing any service they may need from our auto bureaus. I am grateful to the Erie County Legislature for approving the hiring of the 11 civil service employees, for without that, this would not have been possible."
On the eight-year license renewal cycle, the Erie County auto bureaus are entering peak renewal periods this year. From 2017 to 2018, license renewals have jumped from approximately 40,000 to 134,000, a more than 300 percent increase. The trend in increased renewals will continue over the next four years. This, on top of the other transactions conducted at the auto bureaus, including vehicle registration and renewal, surrendering of license plates, and driver's permit and commercial driver's license testing, are leading to congested auto bureau offices, Kearns' camp said,
"I am proud to support Clerk Kearns in extending this terrific service to residents of the Northtowns and surrounding communities," Hardwick said. "Few things are more frustrating than waiting in long lines at the DMV, and this will offer a better experience for customers as well as more flexibility around their busy schedules."
The Northtowns Auto Bureau will be the second office in Erie County to be open on Saturdays, with the Cheektowaga Auto Bureau also offering Saturday service. Erie County is the only county in the state to offer Saturday service at its auto bureaus.
Hours of operation at the Northtowns Auto Bureau will be 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. weekdays and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays. The Northtowns Auto Bureau will be the only location in the county open six days a week.
