The Carnegie Art Center in North Tonawanda will host a monthlong exhibition of original book art and comic memorabilia. "The World Of Comic Book Art: A Visual Exploration" exhibition is part of the collection of the late Dr. Maurie Dewey, and members of his family who share his passion for comic strips and comic books.
An opening-day party will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 30.
Dewey grew up through the challenges of The Great Depression of the 1930s, eagerly anticipating Sunday installments of "Flash Gordon" and other action comics. As an adult, Dewey exuded a child-like energy and good humor that was fueled by his love of life, his family and community, and the funny papers.
His collecting and enthusiasm for the medium moved him to assemble exhibitions of various kinds of comics, cartoons and illustrations at the Carnegie Art Center over the years. The legacy of his generous spirit and love of his community continues through his wife and family who host this years' exhibit and opening event fundraiser to support the Carnegie and its programs. More than 30 members of the Dewey family will take part in hosting and managing the opening day party, which will include:
Free admission to the gallery show - food, drink, and live music
Activities for children: Face painting, hayrides, a comic book art class managed by local artists and illustrators
Awards for participants in drawing activities
Activities throughout the month of July include a story project with final awards announced at the end of July, and a monthlong raffle of rare and valuable comics and comic book memorabilia. (A list of raffle items will be available on the CAC website.)
The CAC is located at 240 Goundry St., North Tonawanda. It is open from 5-9 p.m. Thursdays and from noon to 3 p.m. Saturdays.
