The fifth annual Hospice Gran Fondo brought more than 750 riders to Niagara County on May 19 for the popular cycling event that benefits Niagara Hospice.
Known in the bike riding community as a "party on wheels," the Gran Fondo, presented by M&T Bank, took riders through the scenic Niagara Wine Trail and concluded with a post ride gathering of wine tastings, foods and live music.
Each route included refreshment stops at Niagara Wine Trail establishments, including Chateau Niagara Winery, Honeymoon Trail Winery, Midnight Run Winery, Victorianbourg Wine Estate, Schulze Vineyards & Winery, Black Willow Winery and Woodcock Brothers Brewing Company. The fun continued back at Krull Park in Olcott Beach for a post-ride party with live music by White Chocolate, lunch provided by Tops Markets, and wine tastings provided by participating wineries.
"We had our best ride yet. We had many riders that have come out to the event every year since our first ride. We are so thankful to our sponsors, riders, and local fire and police agencies that make our event possible," said Maureen Rizzo of Niagara Hospice.
Team awards were presented at the post ride party. Winning the Team Spirit trophy was "Team Zzingerz" and The Spokes Award for highest fundraising within a Niagara Hospice contracted health care facility went to Elderwood's "Tour de Elderwood." The Leader of the Pack was awarded to "Team ARTIE" for the team with the highest fundraising.
Support vehicles, generously provided by Bert's Bikes and Tom's Pro Bike, traveled the routes and helped riders in need of bike repairs along the ride. Both Bert's and Tom's have supported the event since its inception in 2014.
Love and Sprockets cycle shop in Hamburg donated a bike valued at $850 that was raffled off at the event.
All proceeds from the event will benefit programs and services provided by Niagara Hospice.
