Buffalo Prep, an organization that provides educational opportunities for underrepresented youth, recently announced an all-new scholarship fund in Robert G. Wilmers' name, established by M&T Bank. The announcement was made at Buffalo Prep's 2018 Celebration of Achievement event on May 2 at Kleinhans Music Hall.
Wilmers, the late chairman and CEO of M&T, led the bank from 1983-2017, was a founding supporter of Buffalo Prep, and dedicated his time and resources to the cause during his life. This investment from M&T Bank is in honor of Wilmers' legacy, and his belief that Buffalo's success and vibrancy are only truly attainable when all of its citizens are given the equal opportunity to pursue an education.
The recipient of the Robert G. Wilmers College Scholarship will be awarded to a student who has persevered despite obstacles, shown leadership, and exemplified personal achievement and volunteerism.
Buffalo Prep scholar Chelsea Thornton, a senior at Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart, received this prestigious scholarship. The funds will help with her college tuition at Niagara University.
"Buffalo Prep has helped me get a head start in my academic career and has shown me how to strive for greatness," Chelsea said. "I plan to travel the world and contribute to our future. I'm excited to major in communications at Niagara University. Thank you M&T Bank!"
Along with the creation of one college scholarship, M&T Bank has established eight high school scholarships provided to Buffalo Prep graduates, with priority to Buffalo Promise Neighborhood students. M&T has also endowed the executive director position at Buffalo Prep in Wilmers' name to carry on his legacy and commitment to a quality education for all children.
M&T's investment in Buffalo Prep is also seen in its commitment to the program's alumni. Through career development and internships, as well as full-time employment, there are currently seven Buffalo Prep alumni working at M&T.
The Celebration of Achievement is Buffalo Prep's annual event that honors graduating high school seniors who have successfully completed Buffalo Prep's academic enrichment programs. This year's celebration was emceed by WKBW-TV Channel 7 news anchor Ashley Rowe. The event raised nearly $280,000 from local corporations, foundations, individuals and partner schools.
Since its founding in 1989, Buffalo Prep has worked with thousands of underrepresented students to provide academic and social support in a rigorous and nurturing environment. Through this preparatory process, Buffalo Prep students are able to enter and excel in local private and competitive public high schools, colleges and universities.
