To celebrate Every Kid Healthy Week, Five Star Urgent Care has compiled a list of easy-to-adopt tips and habits for parents and guardians to help guide their children in living a healthy, active life. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services designated the last week of April as Every Kid Healthy Week about six years ago as a time to raise awareness of the link between nutrition, physical activity and learning in their children.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports childhood obesity more than tripled since the 1970s and studies continue to indicate one in five school-aged children are above a healthy weight.
"Five Star Urgent Care is committed to helping families live a healthy and active lifestyle each day," said John Radford, M.D., president, Five Star Urgent Care. "Our dedication to patients doesn't end after they are seen and treated by our Five Star team. We take pride in providing ongoing and easy-to-adopt health tips and advice to families to help them make long-term informed decisions about their health."
The following are simple tips to celebrate Every Kid Healthy Week and beyond:
•Ensure your child starts their day right with a wholesome breakfast, such as whole-wheat toast topped with egg whites and a side of fresh fruit.
•Make time for at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day with the whole family. Weekly runs, walks, bike rides and hikes are some ways to get outdoors and stay fit.
•Make your shopping list in advance and plan out school lunches, afternoon snacks and dinner menus each week. If sitting down to dinner every night as a family isn't possible, make car-ready meals in advance for eating on the go.
•Substitute salty, fried snacks with fresh vegetables and hummus to keep snacking healthy and delicious.
•Establish bedtimes that allow children to get at least eight hours of rest each night.
•Replace sugary sports drinks and sodas with fresh water to stay hydrated. To make bottled or tap water more flavorful, add chopped fruits such as strawberries, kiwis, lemons and oranges.
•Limit time with cell phones, tablets, TVs and other screens to no more than two hours and promote the importance of traditional reading.
