Departments encouraged to apply for federal grants before April 27 deadline
Congressman Brian Higgins announced the opportunity for local fire departments to apply for a federal fire grant through the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program. The SAFER initiative, administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency, is aimed at bolstering the nation's ability to respond to fire and fire-related hazards.
This year, Congress appropriated $345 million for the SAFER grant program to assist fire departments with efforts to increase the number of trained, "frontline" firefighters.
All grant applications are due before the closing of the application period at 5 p.m. Friday, April 27.
A number of tools are available to applicants through the federal fire grant website: www.fema.gov/firegrants. Applicants with additional questions may also contact the SAFER program helpdesk by calling 1-866-274-0960 or emailing [email protected].
