The Miss Buffalo Scholarship Competition will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Shea's 710 Main Theatre in Buffalo. The Miss Buffalo Scholarship Organization will welcome 14 contestants to this year's competition.
Executive Director Michael Terragnoli said, "The organization is very pleased with the number of intelligent, ambitious and talented young women who have entered the competition." President Stephanie Gelber said, "With the number of outstanding contestants, it will be a challenging task for the judges to choose the next Miss Buffalo."
Contestants will compete in four phases of competition, including talent, lifestyle and fitness, interview and evening wear. During the competition, each contestant will also discuss her chosen platform, a social or community issue of concern to herself and society at large. There will also be a production with musical numbers, song, dance and emcees.
One young woman will be crowned with the title of Miss Buffalo, as well as a $5,000 scholarship. In addition, a $3,000 scholarship will be awarded to the first runner-up, a 2,000 scholarship to the second runner-up, a $1,000 scholarship to the third runner-up and a $500 scholarship to the winner of the interview portion of the competition. The money is intended to be used for college or graduate school education.
In addition, the American Musical & Dramatic Academy (AMDA) is providing a $5,000 in-kind scholarship to the winner of the talent portion of the competition.
During her year of service, Miss Buffalo will travel across Western New York, speaking to business leaders and community groups about her platform and encouraging them to become involved in her cause. Miss Buffalo will not only serve as a role model for young women and as an ambassador for the Miss America Organization, she will also urge young women to develop their leadership skills and take an active role in their communities. She will be eligible to compete as Miss Buffalo for the Miss New York title in June.
