The mission of Cornell Cooperative Extension is to enable people to improve their lives and communities through partnerships that put experience and research knowledge to work. At the annual state yearend luncheon, the Friend of Extension Award was given to someone who embodies that mission: Jim Bittner of Appleton.
Citing Bittner's long-term involvement with Cornell Cooperative Extension, CCE Director Dr. Chris Watkins, also associate dean for the colleges of agriculture/life sciences and human ecology, presented the award.
"Jim Bittner truly embodies the exceptional qualities of a Friend of Extension awardee," Watkins said.
Using a PowerPoint presentation, Watkins reviewed Bittner's history, starting with his involvement with Niagara County's 4-H program. The list included participation in the beef program, tractor-driving program and talent shows, culminating in Bittner being "King of the Fair."
Bittner served on the CCE board of directors and was chairman. Today, he works with the Geneva Experimental Station and other state CCE groups focusing on fruit research.
Appointed as the New York delegate to the Council for Agricultural Research, Extension and Teaching in 2012, Bittner participates in lobbying and educational efforts with national representatives. Through his work serving on the New York Farm Viability Institute Board, he worked with growers and researches to provide funding for projects that would enhance the economic future of New York's farms.
