Grand Island Fire Chief Chris Soluri reports that the Grand Island Fire Co. recently created a new active volunteer EMS category in order to provide additional opportunities for those who have a preference for caregiving within their community. He stressed that this innovation represents a revitalization of recruitment and retention policies, which have always been a top priority for GIFC leadership.
Although those accepted as active EMS members would receive basic exterior firefighting training, emphasis will be on EMT/paramedic certification during their first 24 months. In addition to fulfillment of assigned squad duties, such members would also be required to complete nine drills and six meetings per year. Those with special skills, such as nursing personnel, former firefighters, EMTs, etc., would have little if any difficulty in accomplishing such minimal obligations.
Those interested should contact Soluri or any other GIFC officer at 716-773-4334 for further information.
