Dr. Peter Butera has been named dean of Niagara University's College of Arts and Sciences.
Butera's appointment comes after he had served as interim dean since June 2016.
"Dr. Butera has proven to be a collaborative leader, critical thinker and creative problem-solver," said the Rev. James J. Maher, C.M., president of Niagara University. "His 32 years of experience on campus has provided him with a keen insight into the unique strengths of the College of Arts and Sciences, its faculty and the entire campus community."
Butera joined NU in 1985 as an assistant professor in the department of psychology. He was promoted to professor in 1993 and, in 1994, became chair of the department, a position he held until 2016. During Butera's time as chair, he and his colleagues evolved into a model department of productive and engaged teacher scholars, with a strong commitment to undergraduate research and leadership in service to the university.
After earning a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Scranton, Butera added master's and doctoral degrees in psychobiology from Purdue University. He has received the Outstanding Scholarship Award (1996) and Excellence in Service Award (2010) from Niagara University's College of Arts and Sciences. In addition, Butera was a recipient of Business First of Buffalo's "40 Under 40" Award in 1997.
Butera, over the course of his academic career, has been awarded seven externally funded research grants from the National Institutes of Health, and authored or co-authored more than 25 peer-reviewed manuscripts.
