The National Fire Protection Association notes that during a fire emergency, "Every Second Counts: Plan Two Ways Out" to avoid serious injury or loss of life. The NFPA has been the official sponsor of fire prevention week since 1922, in observance of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, when over 250 people lost their lives.
Fire officials point out that smoke detectors provide occupants sufficient warning to evacuate without delay. It is imperative that everyone know their home and practice life-saving drills. Children should be able to escape on their own if separated from their parents. If fire blocks one route, another one should be available. Doors should be closed after leaving to prevent oxygen-rich air from entering and further spreading any fire. And, once outside, never go back into a burning building for any reason; your life may depend upon it. Let firefighters rescue pets or retrieve valuables, since they will be at the scene within minutes.
These messages and other fire safety tips will be brought to Grand Island elementary school students during fire prevention week.
The weekly program will wind up with an open house at fire headquarters from 5-8 p.m. Oct. 13.
