Ellen Doyle, R.N., was awarded the 2017 Ruth and William O. Sass, M.D. Scholarship.
Doyle is a 2017 graduate of Niagara County Community College and a recipient of the Graduate Nurse Membership Award from the Professional Nurses Association of Western New York. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at the University at Buffalo.
Named in honor of Dr. and Mrs. William O. Sass, the endowed scholarship, made to the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center Foundation, was established in 1998 to promote excellence in the field of nursing. Nearly $50,000 in assistance has been awarded to nursing students since its inception.
Dr. Sass, a beloved Niagara Falls physician, was a longtime member of the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center staff who provided specialized eye and vision care to generations of Niagara Falls-area residents. He served for many years as head of the division of ophthalmology prior to his retirement.
Sass died this spring in Florida.
Applicants for the annual scholarship are required to be candidates for a baccalaureate degree in nursing and are evaluated on criteria such as academic achievement, community involvement and commitment, nursing career goals, personal and professional references and the availability of other resources.
Upon graduation, awardees are expected to apply for appropriate employment vacancies at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center and to accept a position, if offered.
