On Sunday, June 4, join the community at Porter on the Lake on Dietz Road in Youngstown to raise awareness of Down syndrome.
"Turn it Up for Down Syndrome" will feature a variety of events and activities from noon until 5 p.m. Included is a concert by the Summer of '69 Band, a basket auction and 50/50 split. A limited number of Krolick's barbecue chicken dinners will be sold for $10. Preoder meals at www.dsaniagara.org.
For more information, contact Christine Sirianni at 870-4904 or Debbie Fleck at 870-1109.
This event is designed to help families connect with other families and community resources. It is sponsored by the nonprofit Family & Friends Down Syndrome Association of Niagara, which promotes awareness, advocacy and community inclusion.
Funds raised will help offset travel expenses for children and their parents/guardians who have to travel to out-of-state hospitals for medical treatment or surgeries not offered in the Buffalo Niagara area. Currently, many families and their children require frequent travel and overnight stays in Boston or Pittsburgh for lifesaving heart surgery.
Event organizers said that, although Down syndrome is a low-incident occurrence at birth, 60 percent of children born still have some type of cardiac-related problems and may require surgical correction.
