UBMD Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine has announced Heidi Narins Suffoletto, M.D., FACEP, is rejoining the practice as an expert in sports injuries and concussion, with a focus on caring for female athletes.

Suffoletto will see patients beginning in mid-March at the UBMD Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine office at the BrookBridge complex located at 5959 Big Tree Road, Suite 108, in Orchard Park. She will also see patients at UB OrthoCare at BrookBridge, the urgent care office there.

Suffoletto, a primary care sports medicine physician, is an expert in acute care for athletes and nonathletes of all ages. She specializes in emergency medicine, concussion evaluation and treatment, and caring for women athletes.

"After being treated for an injury while playing varsity squash in college, I began working as a student athletic trainer," Suffoletto said. "I realized that I really enjoy caring for women athletes. They experience injuries differently than their male counterparts, and it's particularly rewarding to help them overcome those challenges and return to play."

Suffoletto was part of UBMD Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine for three years before departing in 2012 to begin a four-year stint focusing on emergency medicine. She will split her time between UBMD Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine and UBMD Emergency Medicine.

Suffoletto earned her medical degree in 1999 at the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. She completed her undergraduate work at Williams College, where she earned a degree in chemistry. Suffoletto completed a residency in emergency medicine at the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, and served as chief resident in emergency medicine from 2001-02. In 2006, she completed a fellowship in primary care sports medicine at the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

In her work with UBMD Emergency Medicine, Suffoletto is an attending physician in the emergency department at Buffalo General Medical Center and at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital. She previously spent 10 years as an attending physician in the emergency department at Erie County Medical Center. Suffoletto recently joined the Buffalo Centre for the Treatment of Eating Disorders as an attending physician.

Suffoletto is actively involved in teaching the next generation of physicians. She is a clinical assistant professor of emergency medicine and a clinical assistant professor of orthopaedics at the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

In addition, Suffoletto is a game-day physician for the Buffalo Sabres and a team physician for the Erie Community College Kats alongside UBMD Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine's Geoffrey A. Bernas, M.D.

UBMD Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, a member of UBMD Physicians' Group, is a private practice group that offers complete care of all orthopaedic and musculoskeletal problems for children, adults and seniors. The group is affiliated with Kaleida Health, Erie County Medical Center, Catholic Health System and Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, and staffs Buffalo General Hospital, ECMC and the Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo. The group also serves as the orthopaedics department of the University at Buffalo, teaching the orthopaedic surgeons of tomorrow. In addition, the group provides team doctors for the Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres, Buffalo Bandits, UB Bulls, Buffalo State Bengals, ECC Kats and NCCC Thunderwolves.
