Celebrate winter solstice in Youngstown

Sat, Dec 17th 2016 07:50 pm

In celebration of the winter solstice, Village of Youngstown merchants on the Main Street strip will hold open houses from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21.

The winter solstice, observed that day at 5:44 a.m. EST, marks a special moment in time. The shortest day of the year and the longest night, its celebrations date to the Pagan Scandinavians and Germanic people of Northern Europe, who would celebrate winter solstice with yuletide customs in preparation of the Christmas season.

In the U.S., it marks the official first day of winter.

Youngstown's Main Street, businesses will be open and well lit that evening, welcoming friends and neighbors with a variety of wassail and treats for visitors. There will be door prizes offered and opportunities to purchase that special holiday gift or gift card.

Offering respite from winter's cold, Youngstown's Main Street has an array of offerings, from dining to fitness, hair care to chiropractic and financial services. Its taverns offer a welcome breather with wonderful libations, foods and great entertainment.

And, oh yes, shoppers may be able to find that one-of-a kind special gift created by a local artist or artisan.

Include a visit to Youngstown's Main Street this Wednesday for a special evening.
