Overcoming budget problems, the Lewiston Family Ice Rink is now a go and starting to come together at Academy Park in the Village of Lewiston.

Over the past week, town crews began the installation process that has seen the rink's base assembled and a maze of tubing connected, the warming tent put up, electrical connections completed and board work underway.

Town Parks and Recreation Director Mike Dashineau reports the ice chiller unit will arrive in coming days, and the rink is expected to be fully ready for the start of the annual Lewiston Christmas Walk holiday celebrations on Friday evening, Dec. 2.

In the meantime, the community fundraising effort to support ice rink operations for a 42-day season this year continues to build momentum. Village businessman Tom Deal, of Deal Realty Inc., who is assisting Dashineau in the fundraising, reported a number of area businesses and individual contributors have stepped forward, and rink organizers are now well on their way to reaching their $20,000 goal.

As of this week, the following have signed on with financial commitments to support the Lewiston Family Ice Rink: Realty USA-Lewiston, the Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce, Warren's Village Hardware, Nussbaumer & Clarke Inc., Tedesco Construction Services, Apple Granny's Family Restaurant, Women's Medicine of Niagara, Coppins Service Center Inc., Hazman-Household Hazardous Waste Solutions, Village of Lewiston, the Kiwanis Club of Lewiston, George Adamson Attorney at Law, Havens Family Dental, Lewiston Village Pediatrics and Deal Realty Inc.

"The ice rink is going up and should hopefully be ready by the Christmas Walk as planned," Deal wrote in an email. "We budgeted for sponsorships and still need them to operate the rink, so I ask you to do whatever you can to support the rink and become a sponsor. With all of your support, we have been able to keep the rink open for the families in our area.

"It's people like you all that make our community the best in WNY. Thanks so much and please continue to support the rink by becoming a sponsor."
