Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz has directed flags on county government buildings be flown at half-staff on Tuesday, Nov. 8, in honor of Capt. Andrew D. Byers, a native of the Town of Clarence, who died in Afghanistan on Thursday, Nov. 3.
"On behalf of all the residents of Erie County, I extend sincere condolences to the family, friends and fellow soldiers of Capt. Byers," Poloncarz said. "We are extremely saddened by this loss and join his loved ones in honoring his bravery and service to our nation."
The 30-year-old Army Green Beret captain was killed while engaging enemy forces in Kjunduz, Afghanistan. He was assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), which is based at Fort Carson, Colorado.
