Construction is under way on the new cardiac catheterization laboratory in The Heart Center of Niagara at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center.

The lab is the result of unique community collaboration between Catholic Health, Kaleida Health, Erie County Medical Center Corp. and Memorial to address the pressing need for cardiac catheterization services in Niagara County. The $2.2-million facility is scheduled to open in the spring of 2017.

"We're pleased with the progress made to date," Memorial President and CEO Joseph A. Ruffolo said. "A number of clinical staff members for the new lab are already on board and are receiving specialized training at the Catholic Health Heart Center at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo and Kaleida Health's Gates Vascular Institute."

Interventional cardiologists expected to be performing procedures in the new facility include Dr. James Conley, Dr. Joseph Gelormini and Dr. Vijay Iyer.

The cardiac cath lab will maintain 24/7/365 capabilities for the performance of procedures such as cardiac angiography, stent placement and balloon angioplasty.
