Grand Island Fire Co. rescue personnel responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident just before 4 p.m. July 21 at the corner of West River Road and Sunset Drive.
State Trooper Chris Pyc said J.P. DiBartolomeis of Niagara Falls was driving south on West River Road when he turned east on to Sunset Drive into the path of a truck and trailer driven by Gary Barber, also of Niagara Falls. The collision took off metal from the passenger side of DiBartolomeis' Pontiac G6. Barber's truck came to rest in front of 3733 West River Road just short of the Meaney and O'Neill homes.
Homeowner Mike O'Neill said the truck came to a halt in a pile of soil for landscaping in his front yard. Otherwise, the truck may have barreled into one of the houses.
"There was a lot of momentum," O'Neill said of the truck and trailer. "That's what stopped him, was that soil."
One occupant of each vehicle was placed on a stretcher and taken away by Twin City Ambulance.
