Drivers will start their engines Saturday, June 20, for the greatest spectacle in lawnmowing.
The Grand Island Father's Day Lawn Mower Race, Classic Car Show, and Kevin Doring Memorial 5K Walk and 10K Run will take place Saturday, June 20, between Long and Sunset roads in Grand Island. The rain date for this event is Sunday, June 21.
The race began on the Island in 1978 and has raised more than $30,000 on behalf of local charities. In the past six years, funds raised from the race have been donated to the Grand Island Relay For Life and its support of the American Cancer Society.
Founded when two Island neighbors had an argument on Father's Day about who had the faster riding lawn mower, the event has grown over time into a spectacle of racing and other entertainment that has attracted hundreds to the Island's West River shoreline, including many from off the Island.
The Grand Island Lawn Mower Race includes:
•The lawn mower race registration begins at 9 a.m. in front of 3957 West River Road.
•The classic car show will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
•The Kevin Doring Memorial 5K Walk and 10K Run will start at 10 a.m.
•Lawn mower races begin at 2 p.m.
•Car show awards will be presented at 3 p.m.
The event will also feature music, a variety of children's' activities, and food by Grand Island Relay For Life team Stomp It Out.
