The Niagara County Department of Health nursing division, in partnership with the Niagara County Office for the Aging, is offering free diabetes self-management workshops throughout Niagara County.

A workshop series is scheduled to begin Tuesday, June 23, at the First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown, 100 Church St. It will run from 5:30-8 p.m. This is the six-week program for anyone who has a diagnosis of diabetes.

The workshop consists of consecutive weekly classes. The program has demonstrated proven health benefits for people with diabetes, and complements the health care an individual may already be receiving. The workshop is designed to help participants enhance their skills to maintain active and fulfilling lifestyles. The goal is for participants to improve problem-solving and decision-making skills to confront the ever-changing challenges of living with diabetes, while learning how to improve food choices, increase physical activity and coping skills to maintain weight loss and healthy lifestyles.

Individuals with diabetes, or caregivers of persons with diabetes, can register for the diabetes self-management workshop program by calling NY Connects through the Office for the Aging at 716-438-3030, or the Niagara County Department of Health nursing division at 716-278-1900.

Groups or organizations interested in scheduling diabetes self-management workshops or chronic disease self-management workshops should call the nursing division.
