Congressman Brian Higgins has announced the winners of the annual Congressional Art Competition. The top piece from each congressional district is displayed in the Cannon Tunnel to the Capitol Building.

"It is important for students to have the opportunity to express their creativity and individuality through art," said Higgins, a member of the congressional arts caucus. "I am always impressed to see the quality work local students submit for this competition, and am proud to display the work of a Western New York student in the halls to the U.S. Capitol."

More than 70 submissions from high schools throughout the district were on display in the first floor lobby of the Larkin building beginning April 20. On Sunday, May 3, Higgins hosted a ceremony for teachers, students and their families where the top winners were announced.

The judges for the competition were: Leslie Zemsky, a local artist and member of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery board of directors; Jen Swan, associate director for Arts Services Initiative of Western New York; Caroline Barry, a local artist and freelance writer; and Samantha Epps, events director at Larkin Square.
