The home modification division will focus on helping the aging population remain independent longer.

Health System Services, a Niagara Falls-based company that provides home medical and respiratory equipment, has formed a home modification division to help seniors live independently longer by providing home modification consulting and solutions.

"Our mission is to provide caregivers, patients and facilities with innovative solutions that result in the best care possible," said Health System Services President Robert Miniccuci. "Many caregivers tell us that their aging relatives want to stay in their home despite the physical challenges they face, and the caregiver is often concerned for their safety. We want to help caregivers sleep better at night knowing their loved ones are safe, and we want seniors to retain their independence as long as it is possible to do so. With that in mind, we created this division to provide both parties with the resources they need to find the right balance of safety and independence."

As the population ages, their health and physical capabilities often change, causing them to need assistance with day-to-day functions. For some, the solution is assisted living or nursing home, but most seniors would prefer to remain in the comfort of their home and retain their independence.

Health System Services created its home modification division to help seniors and caregivers with this challenging scenario by providing consultative services on ways to modify a residence so the patient can live independently without sacrificing safety. Experts from Health System Services visit the home and assess the patient's needs. From there, they work with the patient to select the proper equipment and have it installed.

Some of the mostly commonly used solutions include grab bars, walk-in tubs, stair lifts, lift chairs and wheelchair ramps. However, if it is apparent someone can no longer safely live at home, the company will refer that person to a trusted nursing home or assisted living facility with whom it has an established relationship.

The creation of the home modification division created two new jobs, including a general manager position, which is held by Mike Strong. He has more than five years of in-service experience. Also, Jeff Rose, a partner at Health System Services, is a certified environmental access consultant. Rose went through extensive coursework, earning an executive certificate in home modification from the University of Southern California (a designation few Western New York contractors have). The company anticipates future job creation as this division grows.
