At 6:25 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 27, Thanksgiving Day, Grand Island Fire Co. rescue personnel responded to multiple motor vehicle accidents on the North Grand Island Bridge, northbound. Assistant Fire Chief Mark Sadkowski reported that after one vehicle was T-boned by another, approaching vehicles could not stop due to the slippery roadway and slammed into each other and nearby guardrails as well. When GIFC units arrived on location, the Niagara Falls Fire Department was also at the scene for operational support, because up to 56 cars were reportedly involved.
Although GIFC responders assisted one entrapped driver in exiting his damaged vehicle, overall EMS treatment was handled by the NFFD, Rural Metro Ambulance and Twin City Ambulance crews at the scene. A total of 12 patients were transported to local hospitals with relatively minor injuries.
The GIFC then expedited traffic control and the removal of vehicles until the scene was turned over to the New York State Police at 8:09 p.m.
