A massive, smoky fire at a containerboard factory in Niagara Falls on Saturday brought multiple volunteer fire departments to assist city firefighters in battling persistent flames. The blaze left millions of dollars of damage and temporarily halted production at Norampac Industries and Greenpac Mill, adjoining facilities on Packard Road and Royal Avenue. High winds and a large stock of recycled, baled paper products outside the mills fueled the fire and kept it smoldering through much of the weekend.
Parent company Cascades Inc. said early this week it was too soon to know when the mills would resume production. (photo by Nathan Keefe)
