A K9 memorial dedication will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 26, to honor K9 partners killed in the line of duty and those that served the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff James R. Voutour has announced.

The ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. in front of Building 2 at the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, 5526 Niagara St. Ext., Lockport.

The sheriff's office was able to have a new K9 memorial created through the generosity of many area businesses and individuals. On the new memorial is the name of K9 Rocky, who died in the line of duty on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011. Rocky and his handler Deputy Craig Beiter were conducting a building search in Niagara Falls. Rocky entered the roof area of the six-floor building and was checking for suspects when he leaped over a 3-foot retaining wall, falling about 60 feet onto a parking lot.

Voutour stated, "It is important to not only remember our fallen officers, but we need to honor our K9 partners that served faithfully and some that made the ultimate sacrifice."

Those paying tribute will include Voutour and Sgt. James Hildreth. Law enforcement officers and their K9s from throughout the area are expected to attend. The public is also welcome.
