On June 12, Jessica Lamson and Brian Zuch were honored with the Niagara-Wheatfield Kiwanis' 2014 scholarship awards. The recipients and their families were treated to dinner at the Jetport Family Restaurant before Kiwanis President Mary Dohm presented the scholarship awards.

Lamson, a Niagara-Wheatfield graduate, will be attending Niagara County Community College to pursue a degree in radiology. Starpoint graduate, Zuch, an Eagle Scout, intends to study geology at Buffalo State College. The scholarships are based broadly on community service, followed by academics, an essay and extracurricular activities.

The Kiwanis Club of Niagara-Wheatfield, with this writer as president, achieved the status of Distinguished Club in 2013. On June 26, past Kiwanis Lt. Governor Ron Parent presented the club with its certificate and member pins. This is the second consecutive year the club has obtained the accolade.

June 17 saw three Kiwanis members at Colonial Village Elementary School for the conclusion of the "BUG" program, Bringing Up Grades. Ms. Gonzalez, Mr. Collins and Ms. Mielke's fifth-grade students were treated to pizza and lemon berry punch, provided by the N-W Kiwanis Club for the students' yearlong accomplishment.

On an almost rainy Saturday morning in May the club held its annual rite of spring, a 2-mile walk and exercise program, aka, cleanup of its adopted highway, Ward Road/Buffalo Street. Nothing profoundly discovered - just the usual car parts, beer bottles, spent lighters and basic trash.

The Kiwanis Club of Niagara-Wheatfield held its first Summer in the Park picnic meeting on July 10 at Oppenheim Park and will continue meeting there on most Thursdays through August. The club's calendar entails numerous events. July 31 finds the club with an ice cream social at Hoover's Dairy following a Ward Road cleanup, helping United Way's "Make A Difference Day" newspaper sale, joining the Niagara County Central Rotary and Wheatfield Business Association at the Wheatfield Lion's annual steak roast and participating at the Wheatfield Family Picnic on Aug. 24.
